urbanflows (an experiment:1)
Vancouver (CAN) / London (UK) / Mälmo (SWE) / Daegu (S KOREA)
May to july 2018
Live video performance presented at Performance Studies International (PSi) Conference; funding from Conservatoire of Dance & Drama, University of Warwick, and a Glynn Wickham Scholarship. Four world cities were linked using Skype video call technology on mobile phones, with the audience viewing a large screen in Daegu (South Korea) and individual performers filming with their mobiles situated in London (UK), Vancouver (CAN), and Mälmo (SWE) simultaneously improvising in response to their own physical location as well as to the Skype feed from their distant collaborating colleagues. The experiment sought to create a hybrid, dispersed ‘city’ incorporating all three places. In doing so, it revealed some of the ways that local and international, real and virtual flows and energies can comprise a typical blended lived experience enabled by ‘smart’ devices used in everyday life.
